Great Southern Killarney Returns

We are delighted to announce that The Malton Killarney has rebranded to the Great Southern Killarney. The reason for making this decision was that much of the local community in Killarney and our guests continue to refer to, and know the hotel as the Great Southern, and also due to the Great Southern’s rich history and it’s positive legacy which endures. Following over 2 years of renovations, we are delighted to make this change, as we are confident that the property now reflects the provenance and grandeur that the Great Southern name represents. We believe that restoring the Great Southern name is an essential element of the identity of this iconic property which will be recognised, past and future, as Killarney’s Premier Historic Hotel.

Since The Scally Family undertook ownership of the hotel in November 2014, the team at the Great Southern have worked towards restoring the hotel to its former greatness. As part of that restoration project, The Grand Foyer has been restored to the original Victorian design, the public areas have been redecorated in classical style, an extensive bedroom refurbishment program has been undertaken and we have upgraded the facilities surrounding The Great Room.

Built in 1854 by the Great Southern and Western Railway Company- the first hotel to be owned by a railway company in either Ireland or Great Britain and Ireland's first purpose built hotel- from 1896 until 2006 the property was known as the Great Southern Hotel Killarney. It was for many years one of the best-known hotels in the country famed for its prized location next to the town’s Railway Station. The remit for architect, Frederick Darley, was to design a hotel in the style of the great country house and to create a grand spectacle to take the visitors breath away. Throughout its vibrant 163 year history, this hotel has accommodated iconic leaders, royalty and celebrities from across the globe and even served as a prison during the Irish War of Independence. We are very much looking forward to welcoming old friends and new to the Great Southern Killarney in 2018.
